Devotion: Inspiration is Wind. Discipline is Sail.
Inspiration is Wind. Discipline is Sail.
-Scripture
“The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” – John 3:8
-Reflection
The Spirit is often described as wind.
Unseen.
Uncontrolled.
Powerful.
Unpredictable.
We cannot manufacture wind.
We cannot command it.
We cannot schedule it.
But we can raise our sails
Sometimes we wait for inspiration before we act.
We wait to feel moved before we pray.
We wait to feel clarity before we write.
We wait to feel peace before we obey.
But obedience is not wind-dependent.
It is sail-dependent.
When we raise our sails daily – through prayer, discipline, showing up, worship, writing, repentance, consistency – we position ourselves to move when the Spirit breathes.
If we only move when the wind hits, we drift.
If we raise the sail daily, we move – even in still air.
Still air is not absence.
It is formation.
God often builds depth in the quiet.
-Application
Where have you been waiting for wind instead of raising your sail?
Is there a discipline you’ve delayed because you don’t “feel it”?
Today may not feel dramatic.
But you can still lift the sail.
-Prayer
Lord,
Teach me to be steady when it’s quiet.
Help me to show up even when I don’t feel the wind.
Make my obedience consistent, not emotional.
When Your Spirit moves, let me already be positioned.
Amen.
